I began shaping in the garage about 15 years ago. I made a few boards for myself and anyone else who was willing to test one out. In ‘91 I started hand sanding for Ed Sakal at his glass shop. During this time. I’d get the occasional tip from Sakal, but, mostly I learned from the local shapers like Gerard Smith(Poi Dog), Mark Pesce, and Todd Mohn. These guys were nice enough to let me watch and ask the occasional stupid question. From there I went into finish shaping for whoever needed help. Which led to full hand shapes. Since 1997 I have done work for Jeff ‘Doc’ Lausch of Surf Prescriptions, Roger Hinds at Country Surfboards along with a private label for ZJ Boardinghouse in Santa Monica. Shaping such a variety of boards has given me a substantial working knowlege of most shapes and designs. This enables my customers the opportunity to find the right shape for their own unique approach to surfing. A Hoffman surfboards is a custom surfboard made by hand,no computers necessary.
